The closing date for entries for The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards has been extended to 16 July 2010. But even if you aren’t entering the competition, their site has a page of excellent tips for writing poetry. Check it out!

If you like to write bush poetry, there’s still time to get your entry in for the Bryan Kelleher Literary Award. It’s a bush poetry competition run by Australian Unity in association with the Australian Natives’ Association and Henry Lawson Memorial and Literary Society.

Using any materials you like, design a cover for Alphabet Soup magazine. Your artwork must be on one side of a sheet of white A4 paper. Make sure the paper is portrait orientation. Do not include the Alphabet Soup logo.
You may enter as many times as you like, but each entry must have a competition entry form with the declaration signed by you and a parent. (Entry forms may be printed from the website or contact us to have one sent to you.)
The winner will receive one copy of the summer 2010 issue (out November 2010), and art supplies worth $20.
The theme for the 2010 cover is: wetlands.
There will be one winner chosen. By entering the competition, you agree to us using your artwork on the cover of the summer 2010 issue of Alphabet Soup magazine. We will publish the winner’s name, age, suburb and state, unless you advise us otherwise.
Just a reminder that if you are in the Perth metropolitan area and planning to enter the 2010 Tim Winton Award for Young Writers, entries close on 30 May.
While you’re in the mood for poetry (April being [Inter]National Poetry month and all), you might like to think about sending your best poem in to the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards.
The theme is ‘I hear music.’ There are categories for lower primary and upper primary. And prizes from $300, plus a trophy!

The Norman Lindsay Festival of Children’s Literature will be held 20 – 21 March 2010 at the Norman Lindsay Gallery, Falconbridge, Blue Mountains.
As part of the festival, there is a short story competition for 6 to 12 year olds. You can find more details, and an entry form on their website. (Lots of books to be won!)
