Bush Poetry Comp closing 30 June 2010

If you like to write bush poetry, there’s still time to get your entry in for the Bryan Kelleher Literary Award. It’s a bush poetry competition run by Australian Unity in association with the Australian Natives’ Association and Henry Lawson Memorial and Literary Society.

There are three $100 prizes to be won in the Young Achiever category. You can find details and download an entry form from the Australian Unity website. (Terms and conditions are on their left-hand side menu.)

Write a short story up to 350 words (shorter is FINE!). Your story must include the word ‘ice’. Include a competition entry form. This may be printed from the website .

Your entry can be handwritten or typed. Make a copy of your entry as we cannot return entries. (Make sure you read the competition rules.)

B. DESIGN-A-COVER COMPETITION – SEE YOUR ARTWORK ON THE COVER OF THE SUMMER ISSUE!

Using any materials you like, design a cover for Alphabet Soup magazine. Your artwork must be on one side of a sheet of white A4 paper. Make sure the paper is portrait orientation. Do not include the Alphabet Soup logo.

You may enter as many times as you like, but each entry must have a competition entry form with the declaration signed by you and a parent. (Entry forms may be printed from the website or contact us to have one sent to you.)

The winner will receive one copy of the summer 2010 issue (out November 2010), and art supplies worth $20.

The theme for the 2010 cover is: wetlands.

There will be one winner chosen. By entering the competition, you agree to us using your artwork on the cover of the summer 2010 issue of Alphabet Soup magazine. We will publish the winner’s name, age, suburb and state, unless you advise us otherwise.

Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards 2010

While you’re in the mood for poetry (April being [Inter]National Poetry month and all), you might like to think about sending your best poem in to the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards.

The theme is ‘I hear music.’ There are categories for lower primary and upper primary. And prizes from $300, plus a trophy!

ENTER OUR AUTUMN 2010 WRITING COMPETITION – WIN A $20 BOOK VOUCHER!

Choose a painting by Frederick McCubbin, and write a poem about it. Your poem can be up to 10 lines long. Include a competition entry form. This may be printed from the website, photocopied, or contact us to have one emailed or posted to you.

You can see some samples of McCubbin’s artwork on the Art Gallery of WA website and at the National Gallery of Victoria website.

If you live in Western Australia, the Art Gallery of WA has an exhibition of McCubbin’s work open until 29 March 2010!

(We judge entries in three categories: under 7s, under 9s and 10 – 12s.)
